Assisting with Accessibility in Teaching

All students benefit from accessibility.

About one in 10 students qualify for specific accommodations related to learning, but many will never request them. Making your course accessible is a benefit to all of your students. It benefits those who won't request accommodations and the ones who don't quality but speak English as a second language, or those who work or live in a busy environment or an environment where they must be quiet, and also the ones who have challenges with focus, especially in online environments.

Accessibility is the law.

You have an obligation to ensure that your content meets the basic, universal standards for digital content accessibility. These guidelines are specific about what you need to do for each content type to meet the standard. Beyond those provisions, accommodations allow individual students to request services, tools, and specific conditions that apply only to them. Accessibility is for eveyrone. It is a professional responsibility of every Mt. SAC professor to know and follow the requirements of our college, the state of California, and the federal Departmnent of Education. this open course explains what is necessary to meet these rules and make content accessible and shares the tools and services that support you in meeting accessibility at Mt. SAC!
